Atlas HO Articulated Bulk Carrier and Waste Containers

The Articulated Bulk Carrier car was designed to navigate tight curves and small, narrow industries where a flat car may have overhang clearance issues on curves, or length issues. Essentially, the Articulated Bulk Carrier is a long, traditional flat car with a pivot point in the center, along with a truck underneath the pivot point to provide additional weight distribution to allow for more containers to be loaded. This car was introduced in the late 20th century when many landfills around NYC closed, and refuse had to be moved elsewhere.

Towards the end of the 20th Century, bulk intermodal shipping became more popular than ever. To free up the highways from trucks hauling garbage and hazardous waste, the 20 foot sealed Municipal Waste Container came into the spotlight. These small containers are a safe and efficient way to move massive tonnage off of the highways and onto the rails. Ironically, these containers can still be seen every so often on the highway, however they are mostly found loaded on the Articulated Bulk Carrier car. What differs these containers from a standard roll-off dumpster, is the much larger size, and the fact that these containers can stack, like traditional intermodal containers.
